Don’t Buy Blind: Your In-Store Mattress Test Checklist

    by Nora Jaymes

Most of us don’t really test a mattress. We sit down for a second, maybe stretch out for a quick lie-down, and figure if it feels okay, it must be the one. But is it?

Not exactly. Real comfort shows up after a while, not in the first 30 seconds. Your body knows what works, but you have to give it time to figure that out.

That’s where this checklist by our team at Furniture Loft helps! Bring it along, slow down, and check off each step as you go.

    1. Lie Down in Your Real Sleep Position

This is the big one, and it’s the step most people miss. Don’t just sit on the edge or lie flat because that’s what everyone does. Get into the position you actually sleep in at home. Side, back, or somewhere in between—your mattress should support the real you, not just the you in the store.

    2. Stay on the Mattress for 5–10 Minutes

A mattress might feel perfect at first, but give it a few minutes. Let your body settle in, especially if you’re trying memory foam, which changes as you lie there. This is when you’ll notice if the comfort sticks around or disappears.

    3. Check for Pressure Points

After a few minutes, notice how your shoulders, hips, and lower back feel. These spots are honest—they’ll let you know if something isn’t right. If you feel pressure, pinching, or want to move right away, your body is already telling you this might not be the one.

    4. Change Positions Naturally

You don’t stay in one spot all night, so don’t test a mattress that way. Roll over, shift your legs, move like you do at home. The right mattress lets you move easily, not like you’re stuck or have to fight to get comfortable.

    5. Test Motion Transfer

If you share your bed, this step is bigger than you might think. Have your partner sit or move next to you, or try it yourself. Notice how much you feel when they move. The less you notice, the better—nobody wants to wake up every time someone rolls over.

    6. Sit on the Edge

Edge support might sound minor, but it matters every day. Sit on the side like you do when getting in or out of bed. If it sinks too much or feels wobbly, you’ll notice it at home—every time.

    7. Re-Test Your Top Picks

After you’ve tried a few, go back to your favorites and test them again. The second round is when things get clearer. You’ll spot the differences more easily and feel more sure about what works for you.

Test It Right, Sleep Easy Later

Mattress shopping doesn’t have to be a guessing game. When you take your time and try each step, the right choice stands out.

Our experts at Furniture Loft always say: don’t rush. Your future sleep depends on it. Next time you’re in the store, use this checklist, trust what your body tells you, and give yourself the best shot at getting it right the first time.
